In brief

The security of a high-stakes examination is based on a chain: definition of risk, protection of subjects, access management, administration, monitoring, incident handling and contestation. No isolated control is enough. The more important the score decision, the more explicit the evidence, responsibilities, and avenues for review should be.

1. Define the issue and the threat model

An exam is “high-stakes” when its outcome could influence admission, certification, progression, or other important decision. Start by identifying the scenarios to prevent: item disclosure, identity substitution, unauthorized access, prohibited help, technical interruption or modification of a result.

The Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing, published jointly by the AERA, the APA and the NCME, deal in particular with responsibilities linked to the safety of equipment and uses which have significant consequences. This reference helps to structure the questions; it does not validate a specific device or a supplier.

2. Link identity and risk without overcollecting

NIST Digital Identity Guidelines distinguish between proof of identity, authentication and federation. Their approach associates the level of insurance with the risk of the service. For an exam program, this calls for deciding which identity errors are relevant, what checks are proportionate and what alternatives exist if a candidate cannot follow the standard route.

The NIST Identity Risk Management Methodology also calls for examining the risks introduced by the identity system itself, as well as experience, confidentiality and recourse. It is intended for digital services covered by NIST; its use here is a reflection grid, not a legal prescription for a Moroccan establishment.

3. Protect content and administration

Separate creation, validation, scheduling, and logging in. Limit rights to what is necessary, log useful changes, plan item versions and document retention conditions. During the test, the candidate must know the rules, the authorized equipment, the assistance channel and the expected behavior in the event of an outage.

The controls must also anticipate failure: resuming after interruption, checking an incomplete copy, keeping an understandable log and deciding on a new session. A security measure that blocks a legitimate candidate without a resolution process may shift risk instead of reducing it.

4. Treat a signal like a signal

A technical alert, observed behavior or statistical anomaly must open a review according to a known rule. The public TOEFL Essentials security example illustrates a combination of verification, technical control, human monitoring and recording for this specific test. It should not be inferred from this that the same device is necessary, available or appropriate for Educati.

Educati grid on biometrics and audio details why automated detection alone should not become a disciplinary decision. Separate collection, alerting, human review, notification and objection.

5. The proof file to request

  • A matrix of risks, controls, responsible parties and impacts on candidates.
  • The rules for creation, access, rotation and withdrawal of examination content.
  • The identity protocol, its exceptions and its support channel.
  • Useful logs, their access, their duration and their interpretation.
  • The incident process: qualification, examination, decision, communication and appeal.
  • Load, outage and recovery tests adapted to the real scenario.

The Educati school management page makes it possible to locate the paths to be examined, without constituting proof of high-stakes examination functions. The Educati prices page helps open the sales discussion; request that each selected control be demonstrated and recorded. Other guides are available on the Educati News hub.

FAQ

Is strong authentication enough to secure an exam?

No. It may reduce some access risks, but does not cover subject protection, administration, interruptions, incidents or post-test decisions.

Does a surveillance alert prove fraud?

No. An alert must be placed in its context, reviewed according to a procedure and compared with other available elements. The data subject must be aware of the applicable process.

How to frame a project with Educati?
